If you haven’t already heard about it, here it is: Google and Bing are at it again. Google claims Bing has been stealing there top ranking results and showcasing them on Bing. In order to confirm this Google setup a bit of code to manipulate specific dead keywords to rank specific domains for these keywords. Two things to consider here -
- Google cheated there own system to make these dead keywords rank well in order to manipulate Bing and..
- Google manipulated there own system to make something rank well in there own system.
What this means is Google has the ability to cheat there own system, something they said they could not and would not do.. Bing in return said that they did not take info from Google and they do not do this as a practice. Sad to say that Google has proven otherwise. Scary to think that if Google is potentially doing a bad job at search results that in turn Bing will follow suit by coping. They don’t always provide the best results as much as they would like. But competition is a good thing in my opinion so I would like them to actually compete with each other and provide us in return a service that we can be happy with.. let us not forget that both these giants are making a very good return on us using there engines.
It is said that much of this stems from Spam, not the usual spam we all see in out emails but Spam sites, sites that have little to say and much to advertise. This is part of the debate – when you search for something in Google much of the results you get are sites that have little to do with what you searched for but have somehow manipulated Google to get ranked well for these keywords. The reason people say this is is because Google makes major profit from this and limits them from removing this kind of thing within their search engine. Now if that is the case why on earth would another search engine use these results if that were the case? A new player in the game (Blekko) has said that they intend to remove Link Farms entirely from their search engine. A bold move indeed, enough to not only get them into the news but enough to get them in a joined debate with the big boys (see debate). I like the direction Blekko is taking, although small compared to the other big boys they are making a GREAT start and doing a bang-up job so far. If you are unhappy with Google and Bing (Yahoo) and many of the rest then give them a try. They use something new to search called slashtags:
“Slashtags are a community-created convention to mark additional metadata of a tweet. They are like hashtags but typically target or indicate other people as the subject of a short word.”
This brings me to me next suggestion:
I like the idea of this search engine and their slashtag system. A suggestion for search in the future: Similar to meta tags, why isn’t there specific meta data about the website like - location, setup date, category etc items that websites have embedded that stand for not only that the site is ab0ut a tell all and if they manipulate this data penalize them for it.
For instance:
Cap Maison Luxury Resort & Spa
Luxury resort St Lucia
Meta location – Cap Estate, St Lucia
Category - hotel, resort
Topic - luxury hotels in St Lucia
Granted this is a primitive example and there are meta tags to that extent but search engines don’t seem to use this data to classify a site similar to slashtags at least not to the prominence they could use them. If a webmaster manipulates this data simply classify them as SPAM or place them on reprimand, a three month ban from the search results.. something!
It’s just an idea!
